What is a Maternity Nurse & What Does She Do.

Understanding the Role of a Maternity Nurse: Responsibilities and Services Explained.

Postnatal & Newborn Care Support

Welcoming a new baby is a significant transition for the entire family. My role extends beyond newborn care alone — I provide calm, experienced and practical support for both mother and baby throughout the early postnatal weeks and months.

With over 30 years of professional childcare and newborn care experience, I offer discreet, nurturing and highly personalised support within the family home, always respecting the routines, preferences and dynamics of each household.

My approach combines responsive newborn care with attentive postnatal support for the mother’s wellbeing, recovery and confidence as she adjusts to life with her baby.

Support May Include:

  • Professional newborn care, guidance and education

  • Responsive support for feeding choices, including breastfeeding, combination feeding and bottle feeding

  • Monitoring the wellbeing of both mother and baby during the postnatal period

  • Encouraging rest, hydration and nourishment for the mother following birth

  • Preparing light nourishing meals and refreshments where appropriate, or liaising with the family’s chef or household staff regarding postnatal nutritional support

  • Establishing calm, practical routines tailored to the family’s lifestyle

  • Supporting parents emotionally and practically during the transition into parenthood

  • Encouraging healthy attachment and bonding between baby, parents and siblings

  • Maintaining easy-to-follow daily records and communication logs

  • Providing guidance regarding visitors, household boundaries and safeguarding considerations during the postnatal period

  • Accompanying parents to appointments if requested, offering practical support and helping families process information and recommendations provided by healthcare professionals

  • Liaising, where appropriate, with medical professionals and additional specialists involved in the care of mother or baby

  • Providing discreet support within fully staffed and high-profile households

  • Respecting family privacy and recognising when parents wish to spend uninterrupted time together as a family

  • Supporting a smooth and seamless transition of care to a nanny or long-term childcare team where required

Additional Nursery & Travel Support

For first-time parents or families preparing for a new baby, I also offer additional consultancy services prior to the booking, including:

  • Nursery preparation and practical home set-up

  • Guidance regarding newborn essentials

  • Car seat and pram guidance

  • Safe sleep and nursery safety guidance

  • Practical support for travelling confidently with a newborn by air, road or sea

Every family is different, and my role is always adapted to the individual needs of the household. My aim is to provide experienced, reassuring support that allows parents to feel confident, informed and properly cared for during this important time.

Professional Standards & Role Clarity

An experienced private maternity nurse provides specialist postnatal and newborn care within the family home during the early weeks and months following birth.

To ensure safe, professional and appropriate support for both the family and the maternity nurse, the role operates within clearly defined professional boundaries and areas of responsibility.

My work remains focused on:

  • Postnatal support for mother and baby

  • Newborn care and guidance

  • Feeding support

  • Establishing routines and household transitions

  • Emotional and practical support for parents

  • Nursery organisation and newborn-related duties

  • Maintaining professional communication and records

While I naturally work in a supportive and adaptable manner within the home, responsibilities outside the professional scope of maternity nurse practice — such as general housekeeping, long-term nannying, family administration, therapeutic counselling or non-newborn related household management — are usually managed separately by the family or appropriate professionals.

Where additional support is required, I am always happy to liaise respectfully with parents, household staff, medical professionals and wider childcare teams to ensure a calm and seamless experience for the family.

Professional boundaries help create a well-structured, respectful and supportive working environment, allowing parents to receive the highest standard of dedicated postnatal and newborn care.
